What is Dry Eye?

TFOS* DEWS** II defines dry eye disease as the following: “Dry eye is a multi­factorial disease of the ocular surface characterized by a loss of homeostasis of the tear film, and accompanied by ocular symptoms, in which tear film instability and hyperosmolarity, ocular surface in­flammation and damage, and neurosen­sory abnormalities play etiological roles.”

Or in simple terms:

Dry eye is when the lacrimal glands do not produce sufficient or good-quality tears or when the tears evaporate faster from the eye surface.

Maqvue is a Nutraceutical product, marketed by Lavue Pharmaceuticals, containing MaquiBright, which is a standardized extract of Maquiberry fruit. The composition of Maqvue is as shown below:

Each film coated tablet contains

MaquiBright® (Aristotelia chilensis) ————- 30mg

Yielding Total Anthocyanins— Not less than 10.5 mg

Yielding Total Delphinidins— Not less than 7.5 mg

MaquiBright® is a standardized, high grade Maquiberry extract from AnklamExtrakt, Germany, containing not less than 35% Anthocyanins and not less than 25% delphinidins. These are polyphenolic flavonoids with important antioxidant actions on the eye.

Maqui berry is a deep purple berry fruit of the plant, Aristotelia chilensis, which is native to Chile, in South America. This berry is rich in Flavonoids, phenolic acids, proanthocyanidins, and anthocyanins, which have many beneficial effects for eye health.

MaquiBright® is a registered trademark of Maqui New Life S.A., Chile and Oryza Oil & Fat Chemical Co., Ltd., Japan and distributed by Anklam Extrakt GmbH, Germany.

Maqvue is available as film-coated tablets, in strip of 10 tablets.

Maqvue tablets may have been recommended to you for it’s eye health benefits. When consumed regularly, MaquiBright in Maqvue tablets is shown to be of use in patients suffering from Dry eye disease.

You can take Maqvue tablets in the dose of 1-2 tablets daily with water, or as recommended by your healthcare practitioner, for atleast 3 months. You can take with or without food. To enjoy the benefits, continue to take Maqvue, as the symptoms can recur upon discontinuation.

You can continue to take Maqvue, for as long as advised by your Healthcare practitioner. Being a natural product, it is safe and you need not fear the occurrence of any serious side effects.

After routine intake of Maqvue, you may experience relief from the symptoms of Dry Eyes, such as, dryness of the eye, eye irritation, eye discomfort and sometimes redness or sensitivity to light. MaquiBright is proven to improve tear secretion and improve the symptoms of Dry eyes in studies.

As per studies done with MaquiBright, significant difference was seen after 1 month of daily use. The improvements continued with continued use.

Maquiberry extract has been used traditionally for several years, without any major side effects. Even in studies conducted with MaquiBright, no major side effects were seen.  The product is generally recognized as safe (GRAS). Contraindications are unknown.
